Osteopathic Medicine is rooted in the following four tenets and we base our treatment on such:
  • The body is a unit (of mind, body and spirit).
  • Structure and function are interrelated.
  • The body has self-healing and self-regulating mechanisms
  • Rational treatment is based upon the above.

So what can we, as osteopathic physicians, do for you?

Osteopathic physicians do not just address your symptoms alone, we learn to understand you and the cause of what is restricting your body from self-healing.  Our approach is different, we look at the whole body and how each system interacts with one another.  For example, if you are a headache sufferer and nothing that has been done seemed to help, osteopathic physicians will not just look at your head in isolation.  Through extensive history and skillful hands they will search for the causes of these symptoms and treat that.

Back pain is often a complaint that many seek out practitioners to help relieve.  But the question that is often missed or left unanswered is why are YOU having this pain?  What happened in your life to predispose you or cause this chronic pain?  How can we prevent this from happening in the future?  We look to understand what you have done in the past that could have lead to the injury.  How has your body compensated for previous injuries and lifestyle choices? An understanding of all aspects of your life from birth and early childhood to your current situation can give valuable information in how we can utilize our hands to help remove restrictions and allow the Health to heal.  We understand the body is an accumulation of previous experiences from previous sports play in youth, musical instruments, hobbies, work, previous traumas, both physical and emotional.  Osteopathic physicians can help you to understand how these things can be playing a part or the cause of the back pain you present with today.  We can not only help to remove restrictions within the body but can education and empower you to always strive towards optimal Health.

Because of our understanding of the interconnectness of the body we often utilize complementary and alternative therapies along with traditional medicine.  We are knowledgeable about and often recommend other hands-on therapies along with osteopathic manipulation such as physical therapy and acupuncture.  Along with diet and exercise we strive to strengthen YOU (Mind, Body and Spirit) so that you can overcome your injury and find your way back to optimum Health.

Is osteopathic treatment only for adults?

Patients of all ages can benefit from osteopathic care.  Osteopathic manipulative medicine is gentle and effective.  Birth is everyone’s first big event into this world. EVERY birth is traumatic.  Even the easiest pregnancy/delivery causes trauma to the newborn.  Some include prolonged labor, increased contractions secondary to induction/epidural, mechanical instrumentation to extract the infant, cords around neck and lack of compression/rotation due to cesareans.  As a result, newborn/infants can have restriction within their body, especially the cranium that can cause problems with breast/bottle feeding, colic, gastric reflux, torticollis and plagiocephaly to name a few.   As we move to toddlerhood and early childhood falls off surfaces, hits to the head and hard falls to the buttocks all can induce restrictions in the body altering growth and development. Childhood sports introduce new traumas with concussion, bumps and scrapes.  All children should be assessed and treated for restrictions to ensure appropriate unrestricted growth and development.  This care may also help prevent future chronic pain situations by removing these restrictions early in life.  Diagnoses such as ADD/ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, learning difficulties, POTS, Lyme disease and EDS can all benefit from osteopathic manipulative medicine.  Our goal is for children to achieve the most they can out of life.

What about high-end athletes?
Could osteopathic manipulative medicine help me perform better even though I have no pain?

Osteopathic manipulative medicine can help high end athletes by looking for fascial and muscular restrictive patterns noted in the performance of your particular sport and helping the body to remove those patterns to enhance performance.  There are studies that show osteopathic medicine IMPROVES athletic performance as well.  This is not only true for sports but also high end instrumental play.  It can certainly help with injuries as well especially concussions.  By finding the mechanism of injury, we can remind the body of the normal by engaging it with our hands and by allowing it to go back to its normal position.  This will decrease pain, improve performance and allow you to get back on the field, generally faster than without osteopathic medicine.  We do not just focus on the injured part but on everything that it affected or could affect in the future.  No trauma, no matter how small, exists alone, it is added to all the other traumas you have ever had and osteopathic medicine can help to remove these traumas, impacts and injuries, especially if performed in a timely manner.
